Strength Training Helped This Dancer Stay in Control of Her Health

Laura Deutsch has been a professional dancer since she was 15 years old. For decades it felt like it was all she needed to do to stay in shape. But after three children, working full time, and teaching dance, it didn’t do much for her body anymore. 

Then she was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. And she decided she needed to find a better way to lose weight, get stronger, and feel healthier.

Now, she’s 34 pounds down and has found her lifelong solution to stay in shape, live a healthier lifestyle, and be able to keep up with her passion for dance.

In July, 2019 Laura joined the Wilmette studio at The Perfect Workout. Now, slow-motion strength training is the only thing besides dance she’s been able to stick with. 

She enjoys the brief, intense workouts and loves that she can fit them into her work schedule. The intensity of the workout and the muscle success she achieves strengthens her entire body so that she can continue to pursue her passion of teaching dance and not injure herself.

Easy on Her Joints

As a dancer, one thing that Laura loves about her workouts is she gets the mind-to-muscle connection.

“When you're doing it, you have to focus on what you're actually doing. So I feel like it's meditative, because it's not just throwing your body around and burning calories. It's a very specific, targeted exercise, and that's good for my mind and body.”

The biggest thing she values about the slow-motion training is there is virtually no impact on her joints.

After getting diagnosed with diabetes, Laura wanted to improve her overall health at The Perfect Workout and because of that, she’s since lost 34 pounds.

“I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. And I think this is a really good workout for that particular problem, because there is a cardio aspect but it's not hyper fatiguing to the point where my blood sugar gets off.”

Although she lost the weight as a necessity for controlling her diabetes, that wasn’t the only motivation that helped her continually progress toward her goals.

Everyone seeks personal training for a different reason. We surveyed some of our clients and found some trends for why men and women wanted to work with a Personal Trainer.

The MEN wanted:

  • Injury prevention
  • All the focus on them
  • Time efficiency
  • Personalized coaching
  • Evidence-based exercises

The WOMEN wanted:

  • Accountability to stay consistent
  • To be coached and led throughout the process
  • A customized workout tailored to their injuries or limitations
  • Someone/something to help improve muscle and bone strength


Though some of the initial reasons for them seeking a trainer overlapped, others varied. But this brought up more questions:

When men and women receive personal training, do their bodies respond to the exercises the same way? 
Should personal training for men vs. women be the same? 
Do men and women gain muscle the same way?
What should men and women look for in a Personal Trainer?

We uncovered answers below…

Are Men Stronger Than Women?

The average adult man is stronger than the average adult woman.

But it’s not an apples to apples comparison. 

Size and weight correlate with strength. Larger people generally carry more muscle tissue than smaller people. This is true in the case of men versus women.

The average man is 10% taller and weighs about 24 lbs more than the average woman [1]. 

The average man also has about 40 to 48 lbs additional fat-free mass (muscle, bones, water, etc.) than the average woman [2].

One factor that helps men produce more muscle is testosterone. 

Testosterone increases a little as a result of strength training (which helps in the process of adding lean muscle tissue), and men and women have similar gains in testosterone when factoring in their sizes.

But the average woman has half to two-thirds the amount of testosterone that men have. 

As far as overall strength, women are generally about two-thirds as strong as men.

When adjusting for the differences in fat-free mass between men and women, overall strength is approximately equal between the two genders

In other words, saying men are stronger than women is similar to saying three-story houses have more rooms than two-story houses.

So, short answer: Men and women typically have amounts of lean muscle tissue that are relative to their overall size. 

Should Men & Women Train Upper or Lower Body?

Women’s lower bodies are proportionally stronger than their upper bodies. Lower body strength in women is about 75% of that found in most men, and the upper body strength ranges in women are 43% to 63% less than men on average. 

On average, women are proportionally on par or are stronger than men when it comes to lower body strength. However, average upper body strength is lower. 

So, it’s a good idea for many women to make upper body strength exercises an important focus of their exercise program.

And men should most definitely not skip leg day… or at least the leg press.

Muscle function wanes with age, so strength will only get worse for both men and women if strength training isn’t regularly performed.

This means you shouldn’t see your own sex as an advantage or hindrance to training. Train consistently with every set fatiguing to the point of “muscle success,” and you’ll see benefit relative to your own body.

Does Strength Training Cause Women to Bulk Up?

The vast majority of women should not worry about “bulking up” as a result of strength training. 

Is it possible for somebody to get more muscular than they want to be? Yes, but it's highly unlikely that it can happen to you. 

In fact, studies indicate that adults who don't strength train lose on average at least a half  pound of lean muscle tissue each year starting at about age 25 (this part of age degeneration is called “sarcopenia”). 

So women (and men) are battling muscle loss most of their adult life, if not actively strength training. This makes getting “big & bulky” with muscle even more challenging.

There are rare individuals who inherit the genetic potential for their muscles to grow  excessively large from strength training (like professional bodybuilders do). However,  inheriting those genetics is RARE. 

Out of the tens of thousands of real life clients we’ve worked with over the years, we can count on one hand the number of individuals that we’ve seen even one muscle group get too muscular for their goals. (And in the rare case that a muscle  group becomes too large, it's a super easy problem to fix – just reduce the intensity of exercise on that muscle group.) 

What Should Men & Women Look for in a Personal Trainer?

There are a lot of myths floating around when it comes to male trainers vs. female trainers. Women are more caring, men push you harder, you should work with a same-sex trainer, etc. 

There are a number of credentials you should expect from working with a trainer, which we will outline below; but none of those myths are true and are generalizations that could prevent men and women from working with an ideal trainer.

So, what should men and women look for in a trainer?

One of the most important factors in your decision to work with one should be your comfort level.

You should always feel comfortable with someone you work with. Being able to trust your Trainer is important and below is a checklist of things you should look for when shopping for Personal Training:

What Have We Learned?

The principles of Personal training for men vs. women remain the same:

  • Exercise (for men and women) should be safe, efficient, and effective
  • Work with a Certified Personal Trainer to achieve the principles listed above
  • Men are generally stronger than women, but only because they are generally larger 
  • Women’s lower bodies are generally stronger than upper body
  • Men average more upper body strength than lower body strength
  • It is rare for women to get bulky as a result of strength training because of low testosterone production
  • Both male and female trainers can help you achieve your goals, and you should always work with someone you trust.

You Have to Have Trust

It’d be a little crazy to expect everyone to walk blindly into a workout with a Personal Trainer, knowing nothing about them or what they do, and trust them completely.

But trust is vital in getting results.

You want to be able to trust that what you are doing inside your workouts is going to yield results. If you’re new to slow-motion strength training, learn more about the science behind it.

One of Gabriel's clients had recently been trying to lose weight.

Each week the scale showed incremental progress, about ½ to 1 pound down at a time. 

All she could really see was the slight changes each week and didn’t seem too thrilled with the results. What she didn’t realize was from November 2020 to January 2021 she went from 160 lbs to about 145 lbs.

She lost 15 pounds.

She Cut Her Workouts in Half & Dropped 26 Pounds

When your husband is a foodie and a chef who makes amazing meals, it can be a challenge to stay in good shape, especially at age 66. 

But Judy was able to lose 26 pounds and drop from a size 12 down to an 8.

She says her clothes fit better, she has more energy, she sleeps better, her shoulder and neck pain is gone, and she has a more muscular, toned body.

How'd she do it? Slow-Motion Strength Training…

She Was Bored With Her Workouts

Judy didn't always take such a smart approach to exercise.

Before The Perfect Workout, she did the obligatory one-hour block at her health club, whether that was a spin class, on the treadmill, or some other aerobic exercise. 

She got good results, but Judy describes that kind of exercise as being “a rat in a cage,” and thinks exercising inside for an hour is ridiculous and abhorrent for anyone who lives in beautiful San Diego. 

“I did not look forward to it. At 20 minutes I was tired, 30 minutes I was bored silly, and 45 minutes I accepted it and just tried to finish.”

“All my life I’ve had chubby thighs and hips. It ran in my family. I always felt like I wasn’t wearing clothes well. I didn’t look good in pants.”

She Built Strength & Burned Calories

The slow-motion workouts fit perfectly into Judy’s schedule, and the Trainers at the Mission Valley studio made sure she got the most out of every session.

The key with slow-motion strength training is the emphasis on working toward “muscle success” on every exercise.

That’s the point at which you can’t possibly move the weights even a fraction of an inch further, after doing several repetitions for 10 seconds out and 10 seconds back.

If you continue maximally pushing or pulling for a few more seconds, you achieve this deep muscle fatigue, and that’s what brings results.

Judy started seeing the effects within weeks. Her pants started fitting better, she had more energy, she slept better, and she lost inches.

She also noticed her shoulder and neck pain from sitting at her desk was gone.

While gaining muscle everywhere (she leg presses 400 pounds now!), Judy lost 16 pounds while going from a size 12 to an 8.

She Debuted Her New Look

Judy had another goal, though – to get into a dress that her husband had gotten her.

“I tried it on and it had a lot of lumps and was stretched to the max.”

During a challenge at The Perfect Workout, she lost another 10 pounds, just in time for her 15th anniversary, where she debuted her new look.

“I got a lot of compliments on how the dress looked on me!”

While Judy would like to lose another five pounds or so, the increased strength and new look is paying huge dividends.

  • She’s able to hoist heavy bags of soil from Home Depot
  • She hits the golf ball a good 30 yards farther than the women she plays with
  • She isn’t huffing and puffing after pushing her golf bag for four or five hours

Retired and Remaining Strong, Healthy & Independent with QUICK workouts

At age 66, Sheila Sutton found herself facing that very question. With a nudge from a doctor, she found a way to stay independent despite her age.

Is This Supposed To Happen?

In early 2020, Sheila Sutton was working out at a big box gym 3-4 times a week. 

She was plugging away on the cardio machines and although she felt good, she lacked strength and felt off-centered. 

“My grandson who is 11 would run and jump at me and I would literally fall. I was off-center and if I missed a step it would be a big production.”

Without much strength and balance, Sheila found it challenging to do simple movements like getting up off the floor or going up and down the stairs unassisted.

She even needed to take rest breaks while doing her hair.

“It was annoying. I'm 66 years old… is this supposed to be happening?”

Once the pandemic hit, one of her sons (a doctor) said the gym was too risky and recommended she give The Perfect Workout a try.

Intimidated to Empowered

At first Sheila was intimidated by the idea of working with a Personal Trainer. She’d never worked with an instructor and didn’t know what to expect. Learn More

The Strategy She Used to Feel Strong in Her Body Again

Christine Griffin was stopped in her tracks when she felt the searing pain of sciatica hit. She had a herniated a disc and with just the slightest bend in the back, the disc bulged, hitting a nerve. 

Everything cascaded from there. Overnight, she went from living an active lifestyle to living in pain.

The Pain

For four years, Christine could barely walk without experiencing excruciating pain. 

“When you have back pain like that, you twist your body to guard from the pain and try to keep it from hurting.”

Now that Christine is without pain and she’s getting stronger and healthier, she finds she has an ever-increasing ability to function in her daily life. 

“I can move my hips more easily. I can hold my body upright – I didn't have the strength to do that. I would always slouch back over because I fatigued almost right away.”

One of Christine’s biggest day-to-day challenges used to be the long walk to and from the train in Chicago. 

“And that's easier for me now that I can hold myself better upright while carrying a backpack. I can walk. I know that doesn’t sound like an accomplishment, but it's huge.”

This 66 Year Old Proves Strong Bodies Are Built in 20 Minutes

Bob Jones, 66, was recently crowned “Client of the Month” at the Long Beach studio and the progress he made during 2020 (the craziest year ever) says it all.

Bob was referred into The Perfect Workout by his friend Cathy, a fellow client in November, 2019.

He came in with a vision to live a healthier life.

And the Long Beach team made that vision a reality through accountability, support, and a science-backed workout: slow-motion strength training.

With his own experience staying in shape and a desire to help people balance a healthy life with a hectic schedule, Jeff’s personal training career began to bud.

When he learned about slow-motion strength training, Jeffrey became even more enthralled with the idea of only needing 20 minutes to get in a workout and care for yourself. This method makes better health much more accessible to those who struggle to get it.

After experiencing a workout at one of The Perfect Workout’s Chicago studios, he knew he wanted to be involved in the company.

Those with M.S. Can Do It

During his time as a trainer at The Perfect Workout, Jeff has helped many clients work through specific conditions. His client Pat has Multiple Sclerosis (MS) which causes her to use a walker.

But that doesn’t get in the way of her workouts.

“Oh, no, trust me, don't let that fool you. She'll get on the leg press and kill it.”

Pat and Jeff’s work together has helped her gain strength, improve her balance, and lose weight.

Just recently, she told Jeff that she surpassed her weight loss goals and she didn’t feel like she needed to lose any more weight.

Those With Weight Loss Struggles Can Do It

One of Jeff’s favorite college courses was Psychology because he enjoys diving deep into the psyche of people to understand them better.

As a Personal Trainer, he gets to use these skills to understand the real why behind his clients wanting to improve their body and health. 

As certified Personal Trainers, we can better serve our clients and help them reach their goals when we know what motivates them. 

One of Jeff’s clients was a little closed off when they first began working together. She came in looking to lose weight and tone up, some very common goals with new clients. But Jeff was determined to find out her deeper motivation. 

After building trust, getting to know one another, and Jeff’s persistence to understand his client he finally found out why she wanted to reshape her body.

“She finally broke down to me. She said, ‘When I was a little girl, my father told me that I was overweight. He used to call me fat. He used to call me these names all the time. And here I am. I am 50-something years old and I'm still that same little girl.’”

“When you get to those moments, not only do you gain trust, but you can truly understand the client and I'm all about that.”

Those With Fibromyalgia Can Do It

Jeffrey began working with a woman named Nella in Orland Park, IL before he took over the SW San Jose studio in California.

Nella’s husband had been training with Jeffrey and had been trying to get her into the studio. Nella has fibromyalgia and was concerned it would get in the way of exercise. But she decided to try the workout one day and fell in love with it.

A symptom of fibromyalgia is chronic pain and stiffness, both of which she would experience often- even in workouts.

One day, she was on the leg press machine and stopped. She put her head down and it prompted Jeffrey to ask her if everything was okay.

Then, she started to cry.

“She told me that, with her condition, it always feels like spinning. And she said, for a short moment, it stopped. And she can't think of the last time she felt that way.”

And the progress only got better. 

Nella used to come to her workouts using a cane, but eventually she was able to stop using it and began moving around much faster. 

“These moments are just incredible.”

And one of the most incredible parts is that despite these challenges and conditions for clients like Nella and Pat, they are still able to change their lives with a 20-minute workout with a Trainer.

Believe it or not, it’s actually been on our list for some time to create a Virtual Training program because a lot of our clients aren't always able to make it to our studios.

With the pandemic, it became even more obvious for us that it was time to innovate.

Luckily, a special mother and daughter duo were already testing the waters of Virtual Training before we knew how vital it would be for everyone…

In October 2019, Robin Lancaster traveled to Texas to visit her daughter Hannah McKinley, a trainer at The Perfect Workout.

Robin has Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and it's always been a little bit of a struggle for her to maintain her fitness.

So, while Robin was in Texas, Hannah decided to put her through a workout in one of our studios. Robin loved the workout and wanted to continue with it but The Perfect Workout currently doesn’t have locations in North Carolina.

This gave Hannah the idea to train Robin virtually when she got home.

After some trial and error, they figured out how Robin could do slow-motion strength training with limited equipment and live coaching from Hannah over the computer.

In just three months of Virtual Training, Robin lost 15 pounds.

She’s also drastically improved her strength and improved her quality of life in everyday activities

One of the key pieces to her success was the 1-on-1 coaching she received from Hannah, in addition to our science-backed strength training methodology.

When the first shelter at home orders were mandated, we were able to quickly pivot from our in-studio personal training to online personal training.

2. You Don't NEED Any Equipment

The purpose of every workout you do (ever), is to achieve temporary muscle failure, or muscle success. Although our Nautilus machines in the studio are ideal for achieving that purpose, it can absolutely be achieved with other mediums such as free weights, resistance bands, kettlebells, and bodyweight. 

You’d be amazed at how heavy we can make a resistance band feel, all while getting you to safely reach muscle success.

Equipment is just a small part of the equation. Working with your trainer to properly execute the super-slow strength training method and keeping up with 1-2 sessions per week are what matter most.

3. VPT is NOT like Other At-Home Workouts

You may view at-home workouts as a waste of time because the at-home workouts you’ve seen or done before didn’t work for you in the past. 

Our Virtual Sessions are not just at-home workouts, they’re proper Personal Training Sessions focused on you and you only.

Videos, classes, and guides can be great resources in a pinch. What you don’t get is the customized approach. You don't have someone completely focused on you to see if you’re doing an exercise correctly or safely. 

A video doesn’t know your goals, injuries, limitations, or how you tend to hold your breath a little before you hit muscle success. Your Trainer does.

There’s just no way watching a video will ever be as effective as working with a coach in a live personal training session. Think about how hard you can be pushed when you are working with your Trainer– it's always more than you thought you could do! Know that a video will not render that same kind of effort and certainly not the same results.

 

4. Virtual Workouts Are Very Customizable

The exciting thing about our Virtual Personal Training sessions is that they’re extremely customizable. In-studio workouts are customizable too but our Virtual Sessions require a high level of ingenuity to provide you with a specific program based on your goals, limitations, and the equipment you have available.

Your Trainer works very hard behind the scenes to make your workouts as perfect as possible for you, and that may mean even more intense than expected.

5. You Can Be Location Independent

You can travel the world and still have access to your routine workouts with the Personal Trainers who know every detail about your fitness journey. You can’t beat that.

And you certainly can’t travel with your Peloton…. Just saying.

6. You Don't Need Much Room

Most, if not all of the exercises require little to no space. Because we don’t incorporate movements like jump squats, sprints, or tire flips, space isn’t really needed.

Think about the size of our studios. The only reason they need to be as big as they are (which is not all that big) is to fit the machines in them. However, when you’re on each of those machines, you are in a static position- meaning you’re fixed in one place, not needing much space for movement. 

That goes for any slow-motion or static exercise your Trainer gives you. All you need is a space to fit the length of your body.

And if you’re willing to try, we can always make more space! Objects like coffee tables and chairs are moveable and if you’ve been training with us, you’ve got muscles to move them!

7. It’s The Safest Way To Exercise At Home

We specialize in slow-motion strength training and exercising safely is under this method’s umbrella. In addition, you have a Certified Personal Trainer observing you, coaching you, and correcting you every step of the way to ensure your safety.

We’ve never shied away from working around an injury. It’s our philosophy that anyone can do this workout. Most of our clients have come to us with an existing injury, condition, pre or post surgery and we’ve been able to help them exercise just as effectively. Our Trainers are thrilled to get innovative for you as well- just ask them!

Most importantly, if you have an injury or condition preventing you from being as mobile as normal, are challenged with deterioration, or injury gets worse with sedentarism, then there’s even more reason to keep exercising!
