She Cut Her Workouts in Half & Dropped 26 Pounds

she cut her workouts in half & dropped 26 pounds

fat loss women 60s

When your husband is a foodie and a chef who makes amazing meals, it can be a challenge to stay in good shape, especially at age 66.

But Judy was able to lose 26 pounds and drop from a size 12 down to an 8.

She says her clothes fit better, she has more energy, she sleeps better, her shoulder and neck pain is gone, and she has a more muscular, toned body.

How'd she do it? Slow-Motion Strength Training…

She Was Bored With Her Workouts

Judy didn't always take such a smart approach to exercise.

Before The Perfect Workout, she did the obligatory one-hour block at her health club, whether that was a spin class, on the treadmill, or some other aerobic exercise.

She got good results, but Judy describes that kind of exercise as being “a rat in a cage,” and thinks exercising inside for an hour is ridiculous and abhorrent for anyone who lives in beautiful San Diego.

“I did not look forward to it. At 20 minutes I was tired, 30 minutes I was bored silly, and 45 minutes I accepted it and just tried to finish.”

Making it to 60 minutes was gratifying but simply took too long.

She also wanted to increase her bone strength and density and change the way she looked.

“All my life I’ve had chubby thighs and hips. It ran in my family. I always felt like I wasn’t wearing clothes well. I didn’t look good in pants.”

Naturally, The Perfect Workout’s twice a week, 20-minute workouts were a big draw.

Did you know?

  • You can get the same strength gains, if not more, in 13 minutes than you can in 68 minutes
  • More workouts per week can actually hinder your results
  • Doing more exercises than needed in a session is an indication the workout may not be intense enough and you can be working harder
  • You can get a full body-workout in with just 4 exercises
  • More rest in a workout can reduce muscle growth and cardiovascular impact

She Built Strength & Burned Calories

The slow-motion workouts fit perfectly into Judy’s schedule, and the Trainers at the Mission Valley studio made sure she got the most out of every session.

The key with slow-motion strength training is the emphasis on working toward “muscle success” on every exercise.

That’s the point at which you can’t possibly move the weights even a fraction of an inch further, after doing several repetitions for 10 seconds out and 10 seconds back.

If you continue maximally pushing or pulling for a few more seconds, you achieve this deep muscle fatigue, and that’s what brings results.

Judy started seeing the effects within weeks. Her pants started fitting better, she had more energy, she slept better, and she lost inches.

She also noticed her shoulder and neck pain from sitting at her desk was gone.

While gaining muscle everywhere (she leg presses 400 pounds now!), Judy lost 16 pounds while going from a size 12 to an 8.

Judy was able to lose fat more efficiently than ever before by adding lean muscle everywhere.

If you want weight loss, you must know this: Muscle burns calories.

Strength training adds more lean muscle to our bodies, which increases our resting metabolic rate, or the calories we burn on a daily basis.

In fact, strength training is more effective in burning fat than most “aerobic” activities because the added muscle helps you burn calories, even while you rest. Aerobics can burn a lot of calories but only in the moment of the activity.

She Debuted Her New Look

Judy had another goal, though – to get into a dress that her husband had gotten her.

“I tried it on and it had a lot of lumps and was stretched to the max.”

During a challenge at The Perfect Workout, she lost another 10 pounds, just in time for her 15th anniversary, where she debuted her new look.

“I got a lot of compliments on how the dress looked on me!”

While Judy would like to lose another five pounds or so, the increased strength and new look is paying huge dividends.

  • She’s able to hoist heavy bags of soil from Home Depot
  • She hits the golf ball a good 30 yards farther than the women she plays with
  • She isn’t huffing and puffing after pushing her golf bag for four or five hours

Even better, she’s now comfortable wearing whatever she wants – skinny jeans, skirts, sundresses, shorts, and sleeveless tops. And she doesn't have to think twice about trying her husband's five-star cuisine.

“I’m delighted! I don’t have the ‘wiggle wobble’ in my arms. I enjoy The Perfect Workout, and I’m very happy with what it’s done for my body.”

The Strategy She Used to Feel Strong in Her Body Again

the strategy she used to feel strong in her body again

strategy Christine griffin used to feel strong

Christine Griffin was stopped in her tracks when she felt the searing pain of sciatica hit. She had a herniated a disc and with just the slightest bend in the back, the disc bulged, hitting a nerve.

Everything cascaded from there. Overnight, she went from living an active lifestyle to living in pain.

Learn how Christine went from living with severe back pain to feeling strong and capable – and the strategy she used to do it.

The Pain

For four years, Christine could barely walk without experiencing excruciating pain.

“When you have back pain like that, you twist your body to guard from the pain and try to keep it from hurting.”

Unfortunately, this created a new problem for her. She found herself leaning to one size, a result of overcompensation to avoid the pain.

Christine ultimately went through surgery and a lot of physical therapy. Finally, she was pain free, but her body was out of whack and her muscles had atrophied. She couldn’t pick up where she left off with her exercise routine from four years before.

She needed to begin again.

“Every time I tried to get back into that rhythm, I would hurt myself. I needed something in between physical therapy and full on workout classes. I needed a personal trainer.

The Strategy

Christine knew she needed a Personal Trainer. But as a busy professional, she also needed a time-efficient solution.

After doing research, she found The Perfect Workout and was attracted to the 20-minute, twice a week program.

“I had special needs. And the trainers I've worked with have been able to accommodate them.”

It was a perfect fit.

Christine had tried traditional Personal Training before but there were two things that made her experience at The Perfect Workout different… and better.

First, she felt like she could “survive it”

“I wasn't pushed too hard, where I felt like I don't ever want to do that again.”

Second, it was effective.

“Some of my original level of function returned. And that was the proof that I needed that it works.”

The Strategist

One key piece to Christine’s strategy to feel strong in her body again was making sure she did her workouts the right way.

That’s where the Trainer comes in. They’re the strategist.

A Trainer will help guide you safely through each exercise as well as help reverse engineer your goals so they're more attainable.

After all, a Trainer is someone who specializes in helping people exercise the right way and getting results… and they’re passionate about it.

Even more than passion, our trainers are Certified through an extensive education process.

Most personal training certifications do not require any hands-on training to get certified. At The Perfect Workout, our certification goes beyond books and heavily involves hands-on training with real people.

We test our trainers’ knowledge and expertise with numerous written and practical exams. All Personal Trainers are AED/CPR certified and are required to complete continuing education as part of their employment with The Perfect Workout.

The Ability to Function

Now that Christine is without pain and she’s getting stronger and healthier, she finds she has an ever-increasing ability to function in her daily life.

“I can move my hips more easily. I can hold my body upright – I didn't have the strength to do that. I would always slouch back over because I fatigued almost right away.”

One of Christine’s biggest day-to-day challenges used to be the long walk to and from the train in Chicago.

“And that's easier for me now that I can hold myself better upright while carrying a backpack. I can walk. I know that doesn’t sound like an accomplishment, but it's huge.”

increased function strength training

The Setting for Success

Christine got her start in one of The Perfect Workout’s Chicago studios, but now she trains exclusively on the Virtual Training platform.

“I've found that the virtual training platform works for me. It actually takes less time. And I don't have to drive there and back.”

The convenience isn’t the only factor that’s made Christine fall in love with Virtual Training.

She’s proud to develop her own toolkit of challenging exercises she can use to assist in her workouts – like lifting her own body weight in different ways.

“I see the advantages of the machines but I feel like I don't need an entire gym full of stuff to get more healthy.”

I hear about people who are having mental health challenges and things like that during the pandemic. Here's something you can do that will make you feel good right in your home. You don't have to leave it. You can just put on some workout clothes. Who cares what your hair looks like? 20 minutes, you're done, and you feel better.”

No matter WHAT your goals are, feeling better is inevitable at The Perfect Workout.

virtual training possible

Believe it or not, it’s actually been on our list for some time to create a Virtual Training program because a lot of our clients aren't always able to make it to our studios.

With the pandemic, it became even more obvious for us that it was time to innovate.

Luckily, a special mother and daughter duo were already testing the waters of Virtual Training before we knew how vital it would be for everyone…

In October 2019, Robin Lancaster traveled to Texas to visit her daughter Hannah McKinley, a trainer at The Perfect Workout.

Robin has Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and it's always been a little bit of a struggle for her to maintain her fitness.

So, while Robin was in Texas, Hannah decided to put her through a workout in one of our studios. Robin loved the workout and wanted to continue with it but The Perfect Workout currently doesn’t have locations in North Carolina.

This gave Hannah the idea to train Robin virtually when she got home.

After some trial and error, they figured out how Robin could do slow-motion strength training with limited equipment and live coaching from Hannah over the computer.

In just three months of Virtual Training, Robin lost 15 pounds.

She’s also drastically improved her strength and improved her quality of life in everyday activities

One of the key pieces to her success was the 1-on-1 coaching she received from Hannah, in addition to our science-backed strength training methodology.

Client loses 15 pounds with Virtual personal trainer before and after results

We've helped a number of clients with MS improve their quality of life by:

  • increasing strength
  • improving balance and stability
  • creating independence in daily activities
  • providing them with a workout they can do with MS and for life!

Read about some of our clients below!

“She feels like she can enjoy being out in the yard and doing what she wants to do. She's even got [muscle] definition. She said she's never seen that before.” – Hannah

What they didn’t know was that Hannah and Robin were laying the groundwork for what would become The Perfect Workout’s Virtual Training Program.

When the first shelter at home orders were mandated, we were able to quickly pivot from our in-studio personal training to online personal training.

The work they had done to improve Robin’s health ultimately helped us offer slow-motion strength training to everyone, no matter where in the world they are.

These incredible women proved to themselves and the rest of the world that there was still a way to stay strong, healthy, and lose weight by doing slow-motion strength training virtually.

The Switch to Private Training Got Her Results

the switch from big box gym to private training got her results

private personal training facility

Paulette Arana had worked with a trainer for years doing a combination of cardio and weight training, but she never got results, and one day she simply got tired of it.

“I thought, this is kind of silly. So I just stopped- even though I still had more sessions. I don't want to go back to 24 Hour Fitness…plus, it was so dirty.

So, she decided to try something else and found The Perfect Workout.

After switching her workout routine to slow-motion strength training, working 1-on-1 with one of our Personal Trainers and upgrading to a facility that follows the Medical Fitness Association guidelines- Paulette finally started to see results.

“I can see more definition. My watches are loose now. I can see more definition in my hands and my arms. I've got space between my thighs. I’m reshaping my body. I just feel better.

Being able to see and feel changes in her body is exactly what she’s been looking for all these years from her workouts.

And while she is building muscle each week in her strength training sessions, she’s also building confidence in her body as she gets older.

Many people in their 50s, 60s, 70s, even 80s, share a common thread – they struggle with balance and the fear of falling, fractures, or worse.

Now, Paulette is able to catch herself easily and feels much more confident she would be able to avoid a situation like falling.

“That's one of the reasons why I chose this. I think it's a great discovery. I really do.”

How She Beat a Lifelong Struggle with Weight Loss

How she beat a lifelong struggle with weight loss

Strength Trainer Menlo Park CA

“If you've ever struggled with weight, it's a lifelong, constant battle.”

Those are the words of our client, Tiffaney Quintana.

After trying every diet and workout under the sun, she found that her sessions at The Perfect Workout were a missing piece to getting in shape and leaving behind her weight loss struggle for good.

She’s Tried it All

When it comes to diet and exercise, Tiffaney had tried it all. From weight training classes to kickboxing and DIY at-home workouts. She would try something new and give it up shortly after, making it a struggle to ever see results.

“I remember one time I had multiple memberships to gyms, and I ended up not going to any of them.”

Without a workout program to stick with and many failed diets under her belt, Tiffaney found herself 50 pounds heavier than her “normal” body weight.

Then she heard a radio ad for The Perfect Workout near her home in Menlo Park, CA and decided to give it a try.

She Keeps Coming Back… Twice a Week

Tiffaney joined The Perfect Workout in 2014 and her 20-minute, twice a week workouts have been the one thing she has consistently come back for, over and over again.

When asked why she is so successful with slow-motion strength training, Tiffaney says the 20-minute duration is hard to find excuses to not stick with. In addition to her workouts being time efficient and effective, she highly values the connection she makes with her personal trainers.

And one of the biggest reasons she has stayed consistent for 6 years has been her ability to continually gain strength. That feeling of being strong keeps her coming back for more.

40lbs Down and Sustaining

In addition to her personal training sessions, Tiffaney began a medically supervised weight loss program earlier this year which helped her drop over 40lbs to date.

She realized that she was just as successful with her weight loss as her workouts because she gets the same features with her nutrition plan as she does at The Perfect Workout:

  • Accountability of a Fitness Trainer
  • Consistency of weekly scheduled 1-on-1 workouts
  • Simple, evidence-based program

Crushing it During Corona

Like many of our clients, Tiffaney was concerned about her workout progress when COVID hit. As a self-proclaimed lover of our Nautilus machines, she was skeptical about Virtual Personal Training and the idea of working out from home… but she was pleasantly surprised.

“I almost feel like I've even gotten more out of the in-home workouts than I was in the studio. I really, really love them and it's all your own body strength.”

After challenging her body in a different way and realizing that she could still gain strength with bodyweight exercises, Tiffaney now views her body and her Virtual workouts with a greater appreciation.

Empowered & Strong

One of the things that Tiffaney has noticed is she no longer exercises solely for intent of weight loss.

“I want to see the fat loss. I want to be healthier. But it's about doing it because you feel better. It's not about the weight anymore.”

There's nothing more empowering than feeling strong. Whether you're training 1-on-1 in one of our studios or getting virtual personal training, you will get stronger.

“My whole body feels different. I feel lighter. And I don't feel as tired. I'm not apprehensive about group activities where before I'd be like, this is gonna be painful.

And that's a really big deal.”

Her Plan to Live to 100: Strength Training

why strength training is part of her plan to live to 100

Personal Trainer Falls Church

Linda Maldonado broke her ankle in 2014 and it left her feeling hesitant that she could stay active and do the things she wanted to do. She was concerned about the future.

But her vision for the next several decades was to thrive. And she wanted to optimize her health and become strong enough to live to 100… yes, 100!

And with The Perfect Workout, Linda realized she could do all of that. Keep reading to learn how building muscle and strength has let her continue being as active as she wants to be in her 70s.

Life Before Strength

Linda joined The Perfect workout the month she turned 70. She wanted to develop as much strength as possible to counter her osteopenia and improve her balance.

Years earlier, Linda came across research showing the benefits of slow-motion training, but was worried she’d get bored with it.

So she continued to exercise on her own, going to the gym for cardio, lifting free weights and taking yoga classes. But after some time she felt like that approach wasn’t helping her get any closer to her goals.

I want to optimize my health and stay strong for the next several decades. I plan to live to 100 at least!

Linda Maldonado

But that only makes sense if those decades are full of health and vigor. (Learn more about how slow-motion strength training can help you live longer.)

Linda searched for slow-motion strength training and found the Falls Church, Virginia studio just minutes away from her home – perfect.

Optimizing Her Health

Before The Perfect Workout and after her broken ankle, Linda was no longer sure she felt up to a trip to Machu Picchu with all those steps and altitude.

“Now, with the strength I’ve gained has come the confidence to do whatever I can – and we did climb two days at Machu Picchu in 2018, each day achieving 150 flights of stairs! With surprisingly NO pain or problem in the days afterward. That felt like a huge achievement.”

Just as the pandemic lockdown started in early 2020, Linda fell on her hands during a walk and injured her elbows, so she wasn’t able to lift any weight for several weeks.

Luckily, The Perfect Workout had launched their new 1-on-1 Virtual Training Program. Linda met with her trainer Melissa, virtually, twice a week, focusing on lower body exercises with the equipment she had at home (free weights and a ball).

Fitness Trainer Falls Church

“That worked really well – she was creative and flexible and always came up with great ideas.”

Especially in a time like quarantine, having the option to train virtually was a beneficial option for Linda, but she’s very happy to be back in the COVID-safe studio working with her trainer in person.

100 Here She Comes!

Linda will be the first to say, “This really does work!”

The 20 minutes of exercise are challenging and intense but she can see and feel positive results.

“When I told my husband I leg-pressed 270 lbs, he said I must mean 170… hard for him to believe!”

She decided she always wants to keep up with her 20-minute training sessions. In fact, she first started training at The Perfect Workout just once a week, but quickly realized she would get better results with two sessions a week. It truly is all you need to get results, and in a fraction of the time.

Having the right method is one big lever to getting successful results. And the other is having the right trainer. Both of which Linda is experiencing on her path to living to 100.

“Having a personal trainer makes a huge difference. The trained staff know how to observe you, listen to you, make changes and tweaks that work for improved effectiveness. I always feel safe and I know my trainer has the skills and interest to make this the best possible experience for me.”

Whether you’re also on a path to 100, wanting to optimize your health, or have a specific goal like reversing Osteoporosis, becoming healthier starts with just 20 minutes, twice a week.

Osteoporosis Doesn’t Just Target Older Women

are you at risk? Ostroporosis doesn't just target older women

Fitness Trainer Newport Beach CA

In recognition of World Osteoporosis Day (10/20/20) we at The Perfect Workout want to shed even more awareness on Osteoporosis, and that starts with knowing the risk factors. This sneaky disease often creeps up on the people it affects.

Check this list of common risk factors to see if you are at risk of developing Osteoporosis.

Gender

Osteoporosis affects Men and Women, but women (especially White or Asian) are at higher risk.

Age

Older individuals, especially women past menopause are considered high risk. Young adults can take precautions now to prevent Osteoporosis.

Weight

Thin, frail body types and underweight BMI’s can be a risk factor for having low bone density which is a contributor to fractured bones.

Hormones

Having lower estrogen levels for women, and low testosterone for men can contribute to Osteoporosis and fractures.

Family History

Osteoporosis runs in the family. If you have a family history of the disease, your risk factor increases.

Vitamins & Minerals

Getting in adequate amounts of sunlight (Vitamin D) helps absorb Calcium, a necessary building block for healthy bones. Not getting enough calcium can also lead to deficiency.

Other Diseases

Diseases such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, digestive conditions, cancer and rheumatoid arthritis have also been linked to Osteoporosis.

Smoking & Alchohol

Excessive smoking and drinking can lead to a slew of health problems including negatively impacting bone health.

Lifestyle & Exercise

The more sedentary you are the higher the risk of muscle and bone loss which can lead to osteoporosis, falls and fractures. This is where your strength training sessions are vital. Each slow-motion strength training workout helps to battle muscle and bone deterioration and will actually help to increase both.

Millions of people’s bodies will become fragile as they get older due to Osteoporosis.

Luckily, there's an easy solution to prevent and reverse Osteoporosis and it only takes 20 minutes.

Learn More about Osteoporosis and how The Perfect Workout:

Total Knee Replacement: Tripled Her Leg Strength

How she tripled her leg strength after total knee replacement

Personal Trainer Menlo Park CA

Total Knee Replacement can sound really scary to those who face it.

Major surgery. Painful recovery. And little certainty that everyday activities will get easier.

Susan Kubiak knew she needed an expert to help her beyond rehab. Read on for her journey of building incredible strength physically and mentally at The Perfect Workout.

Susan Kubiak was coming out of a total knee replacement in July 2019. After three and a half weeks in skilled nursing she transitioned to a formal rehab program to continue strengthening her knee.

Once that program ended, Susan started looking at alternatives that allowed her to continue exercising twice a week with an instructor- two things that had worked for her during her 3 months of rehabilitation.

Susan researched big box gyms, Crossfit, personal training and her search ultimately led her to The Perfect Workout.

“One of the things that was so attractive to me about it is that I had been using the Nautilus equipment for the leg press. That was an identical piece of equipment that I had used in my physical rehabilitation program. I was confident that that was a solid way to go.”

Data-Driven Motivation

“The other thing that I really like about the program is the ability for it to keep data. I really appreciate looking at that. It's highly motivating to me to see that I am making progress.”

At The Perfect Workout we track the amount of weights that you're lifting so we can see your strength progress, but we track so much more than that. We also track:

  • Workout Settings: Our staff keeps a detailed profile on your seat settings, modifications and overall program so you can get the same excellent workout with any trainer, at any of our locations.
  • Time under Tension: which is the amount of time spent on the exercise, and we use this as a benchmark to understand if it's time to increase resistance or scale it back
  • And other measurements such as body measurements, weight tracking, and before and after photos if its a method you’re interested in… but no pressure from our Trainers!

This is a science-backed program and we want our clients to have access to this data to really understand what slow-motion strength training is doing for your body.

Stronger Than Ever

One of Susan’s proudest achievements so far has been building up strength, particularly on her favorite machine… The Leg Press.

When she left physical therapy, Susan was pushing 80 pounds (on the same leg press we use in the studio). Six months later, she is pushing 225 pounds. In that short amount of time she’s been able to increase her strength by 280%. Impressive!

Now that she’s proven her body won’t let her down with this safe and effective method, the thing Susan is most proud of is her mental strength.

“You can be your worst enemy, if you will trust your head, your body will follow. I can physically perform these tasks in the right way with encouragement and education. I don't let my head get in the way of letting me down.”

The trainers at The Perfect Workout have been able to help Susan create a stronger muscle-mind connection and it has left her feeling strong and empowered.

“The positive nature of the trainers and the background that they have is just so encouraging for me, and particularly in something that I'm not an expert in. They're the experts, I need their help. I need their guidance.”

Susan recently celebrated her 66th birthday and feels like having an exercise program that allows her to perform strength training safely, but intensely is vital.

“And the science behind this is just incredible.”

Data-Driven Workout to lose 30 pounds in 4 months

Math teacher uses data-driven workout to lose 30 pounds in 4 months.

Personal Trainer El Cerrito CA

They say you’ll never regret a workout.

But not all workouts are created equal and you definitely don’t want to waste months or years doing workouts that produce zero results.

Which is why Liz Little skipped the group training classes and used our data-driven workout to lose 30 pounds in 4 months.

On the road from Missouri to California a couple summers ago, Liz Little had an epiphany.

“I thought about how much weight I had gained the past two years and realized I had to do something.”

She was playing a game on her phone and an ad for The Perfect Workout came up. It was impeccable timing.

“I was able to schedule an intro session right there. A 20-minute workout, twice a week? I liked the sound of that!”

During her first session at The Perfect Workout’s El Cerrito studio, she told her trainer that slow-motion strength training wouldn’t work for her. She felt too out of shape.

He listened to her concerns but respectfully disagreed. He was so confident that this would work for Liz that it gave her confidence. And he was right!

“I was impressed by his attention to detail and his ability to motivate me to reach muscle success. He modified each exercise to fit my particular needs – my size, my range of motion, mechanics, old injuries, my goals, and current fitness levels. And he kept adjusting them to keep up with my changing needs and body. When he’s training me, I don’t have to think.”

Liz came twice a week, put in effort and got incredible results.

Strength Trainer El Cerrito CA

In her first year with The Perfect Workout, Liz dropped from 160 to 130 lbs. and lost inches in all the right places.

She’s gained muscle tone all over, and feels stronger and more energetic in her daily life.

“I’m finally able to enjoy what I want to enjoy. When I was overweight, I couldn’t do activities the way I wanted to. I thought it was aging, but once I started slow-motion strength training, I realized I was just out of shape.”

As a math teacher, Liz wasn’t going to anything that's not data driven.

“This technique has shown to have the best and safest results, especially for older people like me who have lived a life of injuries and issues.”

Liz is in her 50s now, and her “body age” is 10 years less than her chronological age. She’s also stopped going to the chiropractor because The Perfect Workout got rid of her back pain.

Liz is thrilled that she's never been injured at The Perfect Workout, making it the first time she's ever gone through any sort of workout where she hasn't had to take days off to nurse an injury.

“The Perfect Workout is the right thing for everybody on the planet. It seems like magic but it’s science.”

The Wakeup Call that Helped Her Get Strong at 71

The wakeup call that helped her get strong at 71

personal trainer 70 women

Most people will wait for something bad to happen to take control of their health.

For some it's getting a scary diagnosis, for others it's watching a loved one struggle with cancer, and for Nancy Pang, it was a painful wakeup call.

The wakeup call

A few years back, Nancy Pang took a nasty fall that resulted in a fractured shoulder. But this wasn’t her first fall.

Previously she had fallen while walking on the cement. Before she could figure out what tripped her up, she suddenly found herself on the ground in pain.

“I fell hard on my right hip and I was black and blue for weeks. I could not walk at first.”

It took Nancy a week to be able to gain the strength to walk around her house, but it was a couple of years before she was walking around normally again.

At the time, she was working an all-consuming job that required her to be on her feet, walking school campuses throughout the day. Not being able to get around easily was a big setback for her.

It was then she realized she couldn’t get through an average day without struggling to walk, and her travel plans may not be possible anymore.

“That was a wakeup call.”

Nancy knew that if she couldn’t manage her own luggage, and walk around easily, especially to some of the European destinations she had plans for, she wasn’t going anywhere.

Nancy decided it was time to gain strength, improve her balance and gain the confidence to do all the things she had set out to do.

In 2017, she joined our SW San Jose Studio and has stuck with it ever since!

The accountability of a coach

Sticking with one workout for over 3 years is a big accomplishment for Nancy because it's the longest she’s ever stayed with a fitness program.

One of the biggest factors of Nancy’s consistent success is the accountability of a coach.

At The Perfect Workout, our Certified Personal Trainers are trained to coach every client through a safe and effective workout. This allows our clients to work with any trainer, any time.

“They're all good. So it's a credit to your company to make sure that people are skilled and competent. They know what they're doing.”

Nancy has been working primarily with one trainer, Jeffrey Blockson and loves the careful attention he’s given her during her workouts.

“Jeff is terrific. He's caring. He's mindful and takes things into consideration, which I really appreciate. And he's creative, changes it up all the time, so that it's never the same and doesn't get boring.”

For someone like Nancy, who admittedly gets bored with programs easily, this is an important part of having a coach. She gives Jeffrey a lot of credit for his ability to adapt to her preferences and needs.

She believes his coaching and encouragement have helped her gain more confidence and his knowledge of the body and workout have helped her get an exceptional workout each session.

“Nancy is a trainer's dream! She's very serious, attentive, and persistent, both during and after our sessions. It's always a pleasure working with her, while seeing and hearing about her progression, physically and mentally! She's an amazing example of true strength!” – Jeff Blockson

Her sustainable results

During her time at The Perfect Workout, Nancy has achieved many of the goals she had when she first joined.

She’s lost weight, and improved her strength, her posture, her balance, the arthritis in her hands, and the confidence to avoid another fall.

“I have less of a fear of falling. Because I know I have better muscle tone. I have more confidence in just moving.”

Her attempt to workout on her own

Shelter-in-place was announced and before she knew Virtual Training was an option Nancy thought, “Oh, no, I can't go to my workouts. What am I going to do? I had a real concern about losing all the gains that I've made over the years. And I said, I can't let this happen.”

So when Virtual Training was offered to the Bay Area, Nancy was excited about the opportunity to continue with her personalized workouts. Since starting, she’s been all-in with her at-home workouts with Jeffrey and loves the convenience of them.

“It's such a great solution.”

Many have tried to do these workouts on their own at home, without the guidance of a trainer, and when Nancy tried she quickly learned it was much more difficult to achieve a good workout.

“I have a tough time remembering all the exercises in chronological order. When Jeffrey's there, he's got it ordered and he's selected the exercises so that it's a full, whole body workout. And I'm sitting there going… I don't know if I did that?”

Nancy quickly learned she didn’t exactly know how to piece the workout together, didn’t know how long to go on each exercise or how to push herself to muscle success like her Trainer does.

When her Trainer is there, “he’s watching, counting and encouraging and saying 10 more seconds. Give me one more. And so the intensity goes up. So when I'm doing it by myself, it's much harder to coach yourself.”

Not only is her Trainer there to encourage her, he’s also there to coach her through all the nuances of perfect form, breathing and ideal speed- all while hitting that crucial point in the exercise, muscle success.

After doing the workout on her own, Nancy doesn’t think it's nearly as effective as working with her Trainer.

“Once I lose form, I’m not really spending my time well. I'm not getting the same benefits.”

And she doesn’t think that she would actually keep up with the workouts if she didn't have that accountability piece.

“That would be easy to just say, oh, I'll do it tomorrow and then tomorrow comes… are you going to do it tomorrow?”

Having the scheduled, paid-for workout on her calendar at a specific time and a Trainer waiting for her, makes her show up each time. If she doesn’t, she knows it's her loss.

“With this program. I call it an investment in myself. And as I age, I don't want to be what I've seen others become. Which is not being able to walk, not being able to pick up my own luggage, pick up my own groceries without the difficulty of falling. It's very damaging when we fall now. At my age, it takes a whole lot longer to recover.

She's not going anywhere

The benefits of slow-motion strength training are endless and it's a workout you can do well into your 70s, 80s, and even 90s. You can’t say that a lot about a lot of other workouts.

“Because it's safe and you're not throwing weights around. You're not trying to pick up something that's heavier than you can really safely manage. And so that's key because like I said, we injure ourselves, then it takes a long time to repair.

I've stuck with it. I'm not going anywhere.”
